The Good Design Award is a “recommendation system for comprehensive design” sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, with the goal of enriching our lifestyles, manufacturing, and society as a whole through selecting and honoring “good design” within various types of development. The origin of this was the “Good Design Production Selection System” established by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (currently the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry) in 1957, and it has continued to be implemented for roughly 60 years. The award covers all areas of design, with roughly 1,200 awards given per year and a total of 44,000 awards given over the span of 60 years. Additionally, designs awarded with the Good Design Award are given the “G Mark”. “G Mark” has continued to play the role of indicating “good design” for over half a century since its establishment.
